How to Plan a Hiking Route With Elevation Changes: A Practical Guide

Almost every hiking day that goes wrong goes wrong for the same reason: the plan was built on distance and the terrain was built on gradient. Learning to read and plan around elevation is the single skill that most improves your judgement on the trail. This guide covers how to build a route profile, how to convert it into a realistic time estimate and how to add the safety margins that keep an ambitious day from becoming an epic.

You need three things: a topographic map or app with contour data, a way to generate an elevation profile, and an honest assessment of your own pace. The last one is where most planning fails, because people plan for the hiker they were at 25 or the hiker they intend to become by August.

Step one: build the profile and read it properly

Draw your route in Gaia GPS, CalTopo, Komoot or any planner that outputs an elevation profile, then look at three things. Total ascent is the headline number and the main driver of fatigue. The steepest sustained section tells you where the day will hurt and whether you need a different approach. The shape of the profile matters too: a single long climb is psychologically easier than five sharp ups and downs that add up to the same total but grind you down.

Be careful with the ascent figures apps produce. Different platforms smooth GPS noise differently, and the same route can be reported with a 20 per cent variation in total climb. Use one tool consistently so that your numbers are comparable to your own past outings, and treat any single figure as an estimate rather than a fact.

Step two: convert climb into time

Naismith’s rule remains the most useful starting point: allow one hour for every 5 km of distance, plus an additional hour for every 600 m of ascent. A 14 km route with 900 m of climb therefore comes to roughly 2 hours 48 minutes plus 1 hour 30 minutes, or about 4 hours 20 minutes of pure walking. Then apply correction factors — Tranter’s corrections scale this by fitness — and add a slower factor for loose rock, deep snow, heavy packs or hot weather.

Descent is not free. Gentle downhill speeds you up slightly, but sustained steep descent slows most people down and does far more damage to quadriceps and knees than climbing does. On rough ground, plan descent time at close to ascent time, and remember that this is where the majority of hiking injuries actually happen — tired legs, late in the day, on loose surfaces.

Step three: add the margins that keep you safe

To your walking time, add 10 minutes per hour for breaks, 30 to 45 minutes for lunch and photographs on a big day, and a minimum of 60 minutes of contingency. Then check the result against sunset, not against your optimism. Set a hard turnaround time before you leave, write it down, and honour it even when the summit looks close — the summit is always closer than it looks and further than it is.

Reading terrain from contour lines

Contour spacing is your gradient gauge: tightly packed lines mean steep ground, and lines that merge mean cliffs. Learn your map’s contour interval, then practise estimating gradient before you look at the app’s number. Watch for concave slopes that hide their steepest section from the trailhead, gullies that funnel rockfall and snow, and ridge lines that offer safer, more scenic and often faster travel than the valley below.

Turning the plan into a document you will actually use

Write your route down as a short list of legs with cumulative distance, cumulative ascent and a target time at each junction. This transforms vague intent into something you can check against reality at 11 a.m. — if you are 40 minutes behind at the second checkpoint, you now have data rather than a feeling, and the decision to shorten the route becomes obvious instead of emotional.

Always plan escape routes. Mark at least two points where you can bail to a road, a hut or a shorter loop, and note how long each escape takes. On any route with exposure, note where the weather would force a retreat and what the wind speed threshold is for that ridge. A good plan is not the one that succeeds; it is the one that fails safely.

Download offline maps before you leave — cell coverage in mountains is unreliable and battery drains twice as fast in the cold. Carry a paper map and compass as a genuine backup and know how to use them. Leave your route plan and expected return time with someone at home, and tell them what to do if you are late. That single habit is the cheapest safety equipment you will ever own.

Training your legs for the profile you planned

If your route has 1,200 m of climb, your training should include at least one weekly session with sustained ascent, ideally with the pack you intend to carry. Stairs, a treadmill on incline or repeated hill laps all work. Descent conditioning matters just as much: add eccentric work such as slow step-downs and controlled downhill walking so your quadriceps can absorb the load without leaving you unable to walk for three days.

Geo guide: how elevation behaves in different ranges

The same 1,000 metres of ascent feels very different depending on where you are standing.

  • Scottish Highlands — Low altitude but relentless gradient and no switchbacks — plan ascent rates around 400 m per hour at most.
  • Colorado Rockies — Altitude above 3,000 m cuts pace by 15 to 25 per cent; add acclimatisation days and start early for afternoon storms.
  • European Alps — Excellent hut networks let you split large ascents across days; cable cars can remove 1,000 m of climb legitimately.
