Few pieces of gear divide hikers like hiking poles. Half the trail thinks they are essential; the other half thinks they are clutter. The research is less ambivalent than the arguments: studies consistently find that poles reduce compressive load on the knees during descent by roughly 12 to 25 per cent, and that they measurably improve balance on uneven ground. We tested 12 pairs over a season of steep descents to see which ones deliver that benefit without becoming a nuisance.

The category has settled into three shapes. Telescoping poles with two or three sections adjust widely and cost least. Folding poles pack down to about 35 cm and disappear into a day pack, which suits scramblers and travellers. Fixed-length poles are the lightest and strongest but only make sense if you know exactly what length you want and never share them.

Carbon versus aluminium: the honest comparison

Carbon poles are lighter — typically 100 to 160 g per pole against 200 to 280 g for aluminium — and they damp vibration, which noticeably reduces hand fatigue on long rocky descents. Their weakness is failure mode. Carbon tolerates axial load superbly but dislikes side loads and impacts; wedge a carbon pole between two rocks and lever it, and it can split without warning. Aluminium bends instead, and a bent pole still gets you home.

Our recommendation is not universal. If you hike maintained trails, walk long distances and count grams, carbon is a genuine upgrade you will feel in your shoulders after 20 km. If you scramble, travel in talus, use poles as a shelter support or lend them to others, aluminium is the sensible choice. Hybrid poles with aluminium lower sections and carbon uppers split the difference reasonably well.

Locks, grips and straps

External lever locks are easier to adjust with cold or gloved hands and are simple to service with a small screwdriver — tighten them when the pole slips, which it eventually will. Internal twist locks are lighter and cleaner but seize when grit gets in. For grips, cork moulds to your hand and handles sweat best, EVA foam is softer and cheaper, and rubber suits cold weather but blisters bare hands in summer. Extended grip sections below the main handle are genuinely useful on steep traverses.

Setting your pole length correctly

On flat ground, adjust until your elbow sits at 90 degrees with the tip on the ground. Shorten by 5 to 10 cm for climbs so you can drive downwards efficiently, and lengthen by a similar amount for long descents so the poles reach the ground ahead without hunching your shoulders. Use the straps properly: come up through the loop from below and let the strap take the load across your palm, so your hand can stay relaxed instead of gripping all day.

When to leave the poles on the pack

Poles cost you your hands, which matters on scrambles, ladders and any terrain where you may need to catch yourself. They also do damage on fragile ground — soft alpine meadow, cryptobiotic soil in the desert and boardwalk sections all suffer from carbide tips. Fit rubber tip protectors on hard rock and dry trail, stow the poles when the ground gets technical, and use them where they earn their keep: sustained climbs, long descents, river crossings and heavy loads.

Technique: how to actually use walking sticks for hiking

The default rhythm is opposite arm to opposite leg, exactly like your natural gait, with the tips planted just ahead of your feet and close to your body rather than out to the sides. On steep climbs, many hikers switch to double planting — both poles forward, then two steps — which converts the arms into a genuine push. On descents, plant early and let the poles absorb load before your foot lands, rather than using them as an emergency brake after you have already committed.

Poles do more than protect knees. They improve balance in river crossings, where a third point of contact turns a nervous wade into a controlled one. They probe soft snow, mud and hidden holes. They double as tent poles for trekking-pole shelters, which saves several hundred grams. And they set a metronome for your cadence on long, dull ascents, which is a genuine psychological advantage on a hot afternoon.

One caution worth repeating: poles shift some effort to the upper body, which raises heart rate slightly at the same walking speed. That is a benefit for training and calorie burn but a consideration on very hot days or at altitude, where efficiency matters more than muscular support.

Baskets matter more than most people realise. The small trekking basket that ships on most poles is right for trail and rock. Fit wide snow baskets for soft snow, and remember that a pole without any basket will sink into mud and soft ground, which is how tips get bent and wrists get jarred.
