This policy explains what ihikefar.com collects, why, and what you can do about it. Last updated 1 August 2026.
Who we are
iHikeFar is an independent hiking publication at ihikefar.com. For any privacy question, write to contact@ihikefar.com.
What we collect
Information you give us
If you email us, we receive your address and whatever you put in the message, and we keep that correspondence so we can follow up. If you leave a comment where comments are open, we store the comment text, the name and email address you enter, and your IP address and browser user agent, which helps us catch spam. An anonymised string created from your email address may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you have a public avatar.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, our server records standard log data: IP address, browser type, referring page, and the time of each request. This is used for security and to diagnose faults. We also use caching software that may store a temporary copy of pages to make the site faster.
Cookies
If you leave a comment, you can opt in to saving your name and email in cookies so you do not have to retype them. If you log in as a site author, WordPress sets session and preference cookies. We do not set cookies to build advertising profiles of readers.
Embedded content from other sites
Articles may include embedded content such as videos or maps. Those embeds behave exactly as if you had visited the other website, and that site may collect data about you, use cookies and monitor your interaction with the embed. We have no control over that.
Why we process this data
To publish and operate the site, to answer your messages, to keep the site secure and free of spam, and to understand in aggregate which articles are useful. We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
How long we keep it
Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely so that follow-up replies stay readable in context. Email correspondence is kept as long as it remains relevant. Server logs are rotated and deleted on a short cycle.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to erase it. Erasure does not apply to data we are required to keep for security or legal reasons. Send requests to contact@ihikefar.com and we will respond within a reasonable period.
Advertising and affiliate links
iHikeFar is funded through advertising and brand partnerships. Some pages contain links from which we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Where an advertising partner serves content on the site, that partner may set its own cookies under its own privacy policy. Commercial relationships never influence our ratings.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS. We take reasonable technical measures to protect data, though no method of transmission over the internet is completely secure.
Changes to this policy
We update this page when our practices change. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
