Friday Photo – December 22, 2017

What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.

~John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley: In Search of America

Today’s Friday Photo is a celebration of the winter solstice which was yesterday (12/21/2017). In this photo is a winter display in Zion National Park, and features the Great White Throne, and Observation Point. Magnificent displays such as this one are common at practically every turn in the canyon. The hiking trails are often icy, but can be managed with a pair of micro spikes attached to your hiking boots. If you plan to visit during this time of year, be sure to prepare yourself for daytime temperatures anywhere from 15 to 30 degrees.

The winter solstice marks the beginning of another beautiful winter season throughout the world. The first day of winter also marks the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year. From a hiking perspective, this means the days are only going to get longer from here on out.

Also in winter are the holidays, and the opportunities to spend quality time with family and friends. May everyone have a beautiful holiday season, and treat themselves with a walk in a winter wonderland nearby.
